The NBMAA’s longstanding monthly concert series features local & regional performances from a variety of musical genres.
SONORO’s music is often referred to as Third Stream, a genre of music that emerged in the mid-20th century as an attempt to fuse the classical music tradition with that of jazz. The ensemble’s impeccable technique and profound sensitivity shine through in their performances. This is especially evident in their thoughtful interpretations of classical pieces, where they manage to bring out a jazz-like freedom and Latin emotion, making well-trodden works feel new and unexpected. In SONORO’s hands, jazz does not lose its freedom, nor does classical music its dignity, and Latin music its passion. Instead, they augment one another in a symphony of the coexistence of styles, bound together by an underlying commonality.
Sharon Ruchman, Composer, Pianist
Sharon Ruchman started taking piano lessons at the age of eight. She received a Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music from Yale School of Music. In 2015, Ruchman's life changed professionally and personally when her great uncle Rudy's viola found its way to her. A virtuoso violinist who died tragically at 25, Rudolph "Rudy" Fuchs' story inspires her to rewrite her own. She begins to take viola lessons, writes her memoir, The Gift of Rudy, and starts to compose like never before. At the prompting of music producer Marc Wager Weisgal, Ruchman launches SONORO, whose music is often called Third Stream. This genre emerged in the mid-20th century as an attempt to fuse the classical music tradition with that of jazz. Today, she unleashes her mastery without restraint, creating modern genre-bending compositions exclusive to the contemporary ensemble. Listen to her music on all major music streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music. Follow Sharon Ruchman and SONORO on social channels Instagram @sharonruchmanandsonoro and Facebook.
